SWP are delighted to be working with Westridge Construction for Brighton and Hove City Council in delivering the extensions to Varndean School, Balfour Road, Brighton.
The school will remain open during construction, and planning is underway to get a tricky logistical project built at first and second floor over the existing building. We are looking at steelwork first floor deck to form the first floor and light weight structure to form the classrooms and roof. Options include timber such as sweet chestnut cross laminated structure and finishes which is locally sourced and grown and provides a good resistance to the salty sea air. Foundations will be traditional with consideration for the building to be designed for disproportionate collapse where required.
The civil engineering and drainage will need us to tie into the existing school system with suitable attenuation and flow restrictors to ensure that no increased flood risk occurs.
