Acorn Retail Park in Crawley is nearing completion. This was a design and build contract awarded to Kier by Cantium Developments for three large steel framed food and non food retail units for M&S, Aldi and Smyths Toys. This included associated drainage infrastructure and extensive landscaped car parking areas and a loading bay area for three HGV vehicles.
The superstructure comprised of long clear span steel portal frames with insulated roof cladding and specialist side wall cladding with ceramic tiles. The front elevation was full height curtain walling with integral entrance doors and lobbies. Internally, two of the units were designed to accommodate mezzanine floor levels. The ground floor slabs were ground bearing and suspended concrete to suit site conditions and the foundations were generally strip and pad foundations with some RC walls to suit the step in levels in the yard area. Foul water drainage was designed to discharge into the main highway sewer and the surface water drainage was attenuated on site and also discharged into the main highway sewer via a flow restrictor.
